Wine growing region Mosel Wine growing region Mosel refers to the cultivation of wine along the rivers Mosel, Saar and Ruwer with a total acreage of about 8500 ha. The wine region Mosel, located between Perl at the Luxembourg border and Koblenz at the river mouth of the Mosel to the Rhine, is famous for wine growing activities in steep area, the outstanding Riesling-wine and its long tradition of winegrowing. Already the Romans should have cultivated one of the oldest grape varieties, the Elbling, along the Mosel. Primary grape variety in the wine growing region Mosel is the white grape variety Riesling at about 60 percent of total acreage. Other white grape varieties are Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner), Elbling, Kerner and Pinot Blanc with about 27 percent in total. Cultivated red grapes variety are mainly Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Dornfelder. At the upper Mosel up to the river run near Trier there are soils of red sandstone, mussel lime shell and Keuper. The Mosel valley at the upper Mosel is characterized by long valley loops and relatively large valley widths. This changes in the further course towards the river mouth. In the middle and in region of terrace Mosel region between Trier and Koblenz, the river is cut deeper into the Devonian rocks of the Rhenish Slate Mountains and meanders more. The predominant soils are quartzitic sandstones, quartzites and (clay) slate.
The protected location in the Mosel-valley, the pronounced slopes and the mild Atlantic weather create a climate at the Mosel which is suitable for wine growing in a relatively northern location. The meandering course of the river, for example the well-known loop near Bremm, leads to a constant change of inner and outer curves and to constantly changing orientations of the riverbanks towards the sun. As a result, large differences between individual vineyards can be identified at small distances and the individuality of the wines is reinforced. Through the interplay of soil, climate, cultivation and processing by the winemaker wines from the Mosel become a tasteful reflection of the location which origin can be tasted by the wine-friend. This tasty origin is called French terroir and reinforces the more individual perception of individual wines that come from the same wine-growing region. At Ellenz-Poltersdorf we cultivate our vineyards at the vineyards Ellenzer Altarberg, Ellenzer Kurfürst und Rüberberger Domherrenberg, which are all single locations of the collecting vineyard Ellenzer Goldbäumchen.
