Ripe grapes from variety Kerner before harvest

Grape variety Kerner

A small part of our vineyards is planted with the grape variety Kerner. This widespread grape variety can also be found in many southern wine-growing regions in Germany and also in Northern Italy. According to the Statistical Office of Rheinland-Pfalz in 2008, about 4% of the vineyards at the Mosel were planted with the grape variety Kerner. At this time, the acreage of the Kerner corresponded approximately to the acreage of the variety Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). In the long-term trend, a decline in the acreage can be observed: Reasons for this include the disease susceptibility of the grapes during the ripening phase and the high maintenance efforts of the vines during the year.

At the end of the 1920s August Herold, working at the State Education and Research Institute for wine- and fruit growing at Weinsberg, crossed the grape variety of the red Trollinger with the grape variety of the white Riesling to create the white grape variety Kerner. Initially known as the grape variety White Herold, the grape variety was later renamed Kerner. The grape variety was dedicated in this way to the Swabian poet Justinus Kerner, who lived at Weinsberg where August Herold worked.

The grape variety Kerner is similar to the grape variety Müller-Thurgau an early ripening grape variety. Unblended white wines from the grape variety Kerner are characterized by their fruity taste. The fruity taste also makes it possible to blend the Kerner grapes with other red and white grape varieties: For example, grapes from varieties Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Müller-Thurgau and Kerner can be squeezed together after harvest. The result is a cuvée called Rotling, which taste reflects the characteristics of the individual grape varieties and which is an ideal wine for a balmy summer evening.
